Stone, since the Guane
The Guane were already skilled stone and wood carvers, and the craft has been handed down ever since. Tourist programmes include visits to local carvers’ workshops.
The Fundación Escuela Taller de Barichara trains people in stonemasonry, carpentry, forging, traditional building and restoration; visitors can see the workshops and buy pieces by students and masters.
Fique paper
At the Fundación San Lorenzo’s paper workshop, running since 2001, a group of women make handmade paper from fique and pineapple fibre in the town’s old tobacco warehouses.
They also look after a trail of plants that can become paper. They welcome visitors to see the process — check beforehand how and when.
Weaving, ceramics and shops
The Taller de Artes y Oficios keeps embroidery, weaving and ceramics alive, with exhibitions, music and pottery and weaving courses.
Around town, shops sell hammocks, alpargatas, tagua jewellery, stone carvings and fique bags and rugs.
Planning note A good indoor plan for the hottest hours.
