The museum

On the east side of the plaza is the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, founded in 1970 by the priest Isaías Ardila Díaz.

It holds fossils millions of years old plus Guane ceramics, necklaces and other objects. A 2026 press report adds pre-Hispanic human remains and thousands of marine fossils, from when the region lay under the sea.

The village

Guane keeps its colonial architecture and the church of Santa Lucía, whose feast draws pilgrims every 13 December.

It’s fique-weaving country: rugs, baskets and bags.

Planning note Best right after the Camino Real, before heading back to Barichara.

Getting there and back

  1. Guane is about 9 km by road, roughly 15 minutes by car, or around 2 hours walking down the Camino Real.
  2. Buses and taxis run back; ask about times and fares in Guane.
  3. Museum hours and entry: check on site.

Safety

  • Guane lies down in the canyon and the sun is strong — drink water and find shade.
