A path with history
The Camino de Guane has been a national heritage site since 1998. It links settlements that pre-date the colonial era and helped found towns across Santander.
Between 1860 and 1870 it was repaired by Geo von Lengerke. By law it is pedestrian-only today — no motorbikes, no cars.
What the walk is like
The trail starts at the top end of town, marked by a large stone, and drops along the side of the Río Suárez canyon to Guane.
It’s easy to follow, but the sun is strong and shade is scarce. Leave early — by midday the heat is real.
Getting back
Most people walk down and return by bus or taxi from Guane, about 15 minutes by car. Times change, so ask in Guane or in town before you set off.
If you fancy walking back, expect a long, sunny climb.
Planning note Put it first thing and pair it with the Guane museum when you arrive.
Getting there and back
- You set off on foot from town; no transport needed to start.
- Return: buses and taxis run from Guane — check times and fares locally.
Safety
- Stay hydrated and avoid the hottest hours.
- The stone gets slippery after rain; take it slow.
- Go easy on your knees on the descent — short steps, no rush.
